Build Internal Time in Odd Meters
Use grouped counting and short silent sections to keep 5/4 and 7/8 steady without relying on constant clicks.

Choose the grouping first
Seven eighth notes can feel like 2+2+3, 3+2+2, or 2+3+2. Pick one grouping and keep it for the session. A clear grouping gives the body a repeatable phrase to carry through the gap.
Accent the first note of each group in your playing, but keep PocketGap's beat-one accent focused on the start of the full bar.
The grouping routine
Begin on one surface. Add a groove only after the spoken grouping and physical motion remain consistent through silence.
- Count 2+2+3 aloud for three minutes while tapping all seven eighth notes.
- Play only the group accents for three minutes, continuing the smaller pulse internally.
- Add a simple groove around the same accents for three minutes.
- Finish by counting only the three group starts through each silent bar.
Progress without losing the phrase
Extend the silence from one bar to two only when the grouping remains recognizable. Another useful progression is to keep one silent bar and remove some played subdivisions while preserving the internal count.
Repeat the same process in 5/4 using 3+2 or 2+3. The goal is not to make the meter feel ordinary; it is to make its unusual shape dependable.
