The goal is observation, not perfection

A gap click alternates between audible bars and silent bars. During the silent bar, keep playing exactly as if the click were still present. When it returns, listen before making a correction.

If you immediately jump toward the click, you lose the most useful information. Finish the phrase, notice where you landed, and make the next attempt slightly calmer.

02

The five-minute routine

Use a groove that feels easy enough to play while listening. A basic eighth-note rock beat is better than a difficult pattern that consumes all your attention.

  1. Play one minute with the click and notice the quarter-note pulse underneath the groove.
  2. Continue through each silent bar without adding fills or changing orchestration.
  3. For the next two minutes, count quarter notes quietly through the gap.
  4. For the final two minutes, stop counting aloud and keep the same physical motion.
03

Make the exercise easier or harder

If you repeatedly lose the pulse, lower the tempo or use six audible bars before one silent bar. If the click returns comfortably for several cycles, change to four audible bars and two silent bars.

Change only one variable at a time. That makes it possible to know whether tempo, silence, subdivision, or the groove itself caused the difficulty.
