Why fills move the time
Fills often rush because more notes and larger motions are squeezed into the same amount of time. They can also drag when unfamiliar sticking makes the drummer wait for each note.
Treat the quarter note as the frame and the fill as something placed inside it. The frame must remain unchanged.
The fill ladder
Use one fill idea for the whole session. Moving around the kit is enough variation; changing the rhythm every cycle makes the result harder to diagnose.
- Play three minutes with a one-beat fill on beat four of the second silent bar.
- Expand to a two-beat fill on beats three and four for three minutes.
- Play a full-bar fill during the second silent bar for three minutes.
- Return to the one-beat fill for three minutes and compare its stability.
Diagnose the return
If you arrive before the click, reduce the number of notes or the size of the motion. If you arrive after it, keep the sticking on one surface until the subdivision is even.
The returning click evaluates the entire silent phrase. Record yourself to discover whether the movement happened gradually or only during the fill.
